ANIMATED PORTRAIT

Working freelance with WEN (Women's equality network) I illustrated a portrait for their women's right to vote campaign.

ANIMATED PORTRAIT

2018

BRIEF

I was briefed by WEN to create a portrait for their 'A celebration of 100 years of women getting the vote' campaign.

IDEATION

I was briefed to create a portrait of Bridget Bevan (1698-1779) a Carmarthen based educationalist and public benefactor.

Therefore, I've tried to incorporate education symbology into the concept sketches, while portraying her in her period accurate costume. This included a lot of books and writing material. Although, you can see this most by the pattern I've incorporated into her dress (e.g. sums, letters, stationary).

The final sketch mimics her official portrait/painting, but places her in a larger than life size desk setting, displaying the large impact she had in the Welsh educational system.

PROCESS

At the time I was using traditional materials like paint to colour my illustrations. The added pencil and paint texture works well in this image as it suggests a both a child like element from the pencil colouring, as well as the painted texture pays homage to the time period she's from and her only surviving likeness (a painted portrait).

FINAL TOUTCHES

To finalise and animate the image, I finished touch ups in Photoshop, where I was able to edit imperfections from the scanned painting and cut the image up to be animated.

The image was animated in Photoshop, as it was basic movement.

Although, now I would be more likely to animate in After Effects.

FINAL THOUGHTS

My visual style and animation skills have developed a lot over the years and I although I feel I would do better now,
I love the charm of this early attempt at animation.
